Yes this is Fourteen Twentysix, the epic shoegazing, spacedooming, glamtriprockband from Eindhoven! But while we are recording our new album we like to have fun by doing remixes and stuff. Speaking of which… download APRX|ETA1 right now and trip away my friends!

The thematic and lyrical concept is in place (mainly developed over the past months by Chris and Tom) and we are very excited about it. It is in many ways true to previous Fourteen Twentysix offerings but also quite a leap forward. We will not spoil it so soon, we think you will be really thrilled about our new direction.

So after the initial talking and “conceptual” phase its time for music…. or is it?

Today we’ve started on the drums, percussive and ambient sound recordings for the new album. In the (rough looking) attic of our old house we put up our recording rig. I think because Chris was a drummer before starting Fourteen Twentysix its the most logical step for him to start the whole process with drums. Most bands start with a few guitar riffs or piano melodies… but we don’t

We’ve recorded various snare drums, metal kegs, barrels etcetera to form our own library of sounds. As opposed to using generic digital drumkits and percussive samples we build our own sample packs so to speak, pretty much from scratch. Its a lot of work but very rewarding because everything really has a unique texture not found in sequencer sample packs.

Out of all these crazy sound recordings we compose drum patterns for our songs. We don’t build up a drumkit and record a drummer playing complete drum grooves. Fourteen Twentysix is more about experimental patterns and sounds and we try hard not to sound like your average garage rockband trio laying down a drum and bass guitar drone. Without giving away too much already about the whole concept of our new album: its going to be more dynamic, rich and “raw” sounding.

In addition, instead of tapping beats on a metronome sequencer grid we also base our drum loops on a organic ambient recordings, like a steel brush scraping along side a wooden window pane. Its these ambient, unpredictable and erratic recordings that often spark the imagination for a totally unique beat or groove. Once the drum pattern is fleshed out the ambient part is often no longer needed but will occasionally be used as a texture or ambience layer.

At the end, when the songs are done, we take some of our custom sounds onto the stage again, mapped onto midi triggered drum pads. This way Jeroen can play his drums using the very special sounds (like odd snares and toms) in combination with his live acoustic drumkit.

So thats it, our first recording diary of our new album! We are going to keep you up to date from here on with frequent updates. Stay tuned!

After a bit of a hectic start (we only had a tight 30 minutes to build up the stage) we were off to something special. We played both older songs and our latest Lighttown Closure material. The alternative version of Descending with a male/female choir was really great and we enjoyed that a lot. It was hard to fit everyone onto the small stage but it was a fantastic night!

We are really happy with all the positive reactions we received, it was good to see so many old and new friends together. We like to thank everyone for coming to see us, it means a lot to us!

You can come see us again later this year on November 11 in De Bunker in Gemert. In the meantime during the summer we are writing and recording our next album, after all, the show must go on

The past weeks we’ve done some extra rehearsals to prepare two different sets, we will not play the same show twice. In addition we’ve prepared something special for the evening, which we’ll keep a surprise. Come see us if you want to know Above is a picture of our first set list.

Its a magical time. The band has really started to come together and we sound better than ever before. All the songs from our debut EP Songs to Forget have really grown on us and are rocking like mad. The songs from our new CD Lighttown Closure have matured as well. It took us some time to come to grips with the studio material and turn it into proper “live” songs.

Finally, we have started working on our new album in relative silence. Keep an eye out for updates on that. The entire band will be keeping a diary of the entire writing and recording process which you can read right here. We cant tell much more at this stage but stay tuned!

Jeroen remixed several of our tracks and worked them into an hour long ambient electronic adventure. We sat down with this illustrious geek-extraordinaire and asked him a few questions.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What does your life look like?

I’m 26 years old and enjoying a simple but nice life surrounded by electronic stuff. I’ve spend a couple of years without music making but I went crazy! Really, there was always some kind of music making in the back of my head. So right now my life is all about music.

How did you start making electronic music?

My dad owned 2 tape recorders, a crappy old guitar amplifier and some Boss pedals. He was always busy with his guitars in a Robert Fripp kind of way

So when I was about 11 years old, I asked him how this stuff worked. I managed to make some dub out of reggae with those 2 tape recorders. I placed one tape recorder next to the amplifier and connected a mic to the tape recorder and began to make some weird echo’s with the mic and the Boss pedals.

That was what got you hooked?

Yes, I was really amazed by how one man could change the sound completely. I was sold.
These electronical sounds and mash-up tapes were just the beginning. When I bought my first delay unit around the age of 12, I already had blown up my dad’s flanger unit by overvolting it. It sounded great, but my dad was really pissed.That was the reason for me to buy my own stuff.

I started to buy all these guitar pedals (DD5, PH7, CH1) and a 19 inch studio twin from digitech. I used these pedals only for my Pentium 75. I used Fasttracker 2.12 in the very beginning. I really wanted to tweak the shit out of sounds. I don’t know why, but I was always intrigued by strange sounding sounds. And with electronic stuff, tweaking is endless!

What did you like best working on the music of Fourteen Twentysix?

First of all, Fourteen Twentysix is a great band! The atmosphere in their music is just great. For me, that’s really important. There must be some kind of atmosphere in music for me to tweak it in a nice way. The second thing is, the music sounds good. The quality of the recordings is just amazing. It’s a really nice mix of digital and acoustic sounds.

Did you use a different approach than you normally would?

Actually I did. Normally I want to have some kind of feeling to start out with. I start making some sounds based on that feeling. This time it was different. With remixing you get involved in the feelings of this other artist and work with that. I had to make these tracks into bits of music of my own. In a way these tracks were changing my feelings before I even started working. Sounds vague huh! Well it is

What are your favourite Fourteen Twentysix tracks?

That’s easy! “Signals in the Sky” and “After the Storm”. These tracks have some really nice melodic parts that I really like. Also the production of these tracks is really nice!

We love to know what your all-time favourite tracks are. Care to tell?

My all time favourite tracks have to be:
1: “Cap IV” by Autechre
2: “Lentic Catachresis” by Autechre
3: “Hub” by Autechre

So you’re a big fan of Autechre?

Autechre opened my ears. Their music/sound showed me what is possible with sound. The complexity and groovyness is brilliant. Also the production quality is always near perfect. Before I heard about Autechre I was thinking in terms of 8 patterns, break, 8 patterns, change etc. That all changed and it became about evolving sounds and patterns. That way of working was totally new to me.

Do you listen to music much outside creating your own?

Yes of course! My whole life is about music. There is always sounds and music blasting out of my speakers!

Can you tell us what we can expect from you in the near future?

Well, I have some projects running right now. Some Drum & Bass, Dupstep, Ambient and some smaller things with singers. There is one EP ready for free download, but it’s a different kind of music/sound.
